I'm getting strange error messages like, "Can't open printer," "System error -42," and "Can't open document." Or pictures are printed using a low resolution (preview) image instead of the correct high resolution file, even though the Picture Usage dialog box (File->Picture Usage) shows the picture status as "OK."
You may have exceeded the maximum number of open files in your Macintosh. If this is the problem, you can either decrease the number of open files in a given application, such as QuarkXPress, or increase the maximum number of open files allowed, using a utility such as Suitcase II or MasterJuggler. Instructions for all of these options are provided below. In System 6.0.5, the default maximum number of open files is 40.
1. To decrease the number of open files used by QuarkXPress:
A. Locate the folder in your QuarkXPress program folder called "Other Filters"; create one if it does not already exist.
B.Drag all the filter files except any filters related to word processors you are currently using into the "Other Filters" folder. You may also place the "XPress Help" file there if you do not use it regularly. Any of the files you place in "Other Filters" may be dragged out at any time.
C.When you open QuarkXPress, it will launch without accessing the files stored in "Other Filters." If you would like to use any of these files, simply quit QuarkXPress and drag them out of the "Other Filters" folder to the same level as the QuarkXPress program.
2. To adjust the maximum number of open files using Suitcase II:
A.Choose Suitcase II from the Apple menu.
B. Click the Settings button on the right side of the dialog box.
C. Click the Power User Settings button at the bottom of the dialog box.
D. In the middle of the dialog box is a statement: "Alter the boot blocks of the current startup disk..." The default value is 12. The number you enter is equivalent to one-fourth the maximum number of open files. Depending on the RAM available in your System, you may increase this value to 99. Increasing the value to 30 should be enough to allow you to open as many files as necessary. Click OK to exit this dialog box; then click Quit to exit Suitcase II.
E. Restart your Macintosh.
3. To adjust the maximum number of open files using MasterJuggler:
A. Double-click on the Set File Count icon in the "MasterJuggler" folder to open it.
B. Select the name of your startup disk (most likely your hard drive).
C. Click the up or down arrows to specify the maximum number of open files.
D. Restart your Macintosh.
